What are Outdoor Warning Sirens?
| You may remember the term Civil
Defense Sirens. These sirens now have a more generic name: Outdoor
Warning Sirens or OWS. The OWS provides mass notification to the
general public both indoors and outdoors, in the shortest time
possible. This is especially important when people are not in contact
with the normal news media such as when they are at the park, the
beach, in backyards, parking lots or participating in other forms of
outdoor recreation. New technology adds speech, with either
pre-recorded or custom messages, to the sound alert capability,
creating a system that utilizes both the siren sound and spoken words.
Some of the potential safety hazards the OWS may be used for:
|
Severe Weather -
Tornado's
Thunderstorms
Hurricanes
Floods
Industrial Paging and Messages
In-Plant Emergencies |
Hazardous Material Spills -
Railroad
Highway
Waterway
Fire Calls

These units are powered by 12v batteries. Charging of the batteries is
provided either standard 120v AC or solar power. A properly sized
battery banks ensures sufficient power for the siren during periods of
bad weather such as rain, snow or fog. A typical siren has a battery
capacity of approximately 230 Amp-Hours. Standby current is about
50mA, therefore, after two weeks of total darkness, only 16.8
Amp-Hours of capacity has been drained from the batteries. There is
still plenty of capacity for a number of siren tone activities.
Proper grounding protects the siren and its associated components from
lightning – either nearby direct or through energy that is coupled
onto the AC power lines. Protection from these inevitable events is
achieved through the use of proper grounding techniques of the
equipment and antenna and by the use of polyphaser gas discharge
lightning arrestors. The The battery charger is also equipped with a
line filter and transient protection circuit that exceeds IEC801
requirements.
Mounting poles for the sirens are available in standard wood, steel,
or concrete. .
